No one likes being stuck in a traffic jam, and the repetitive forward—stop—forward—stop movement can start to seem like a cruel joke after a while. Not only is it incredibly frustrating to be in stop-and-go traffic, it can be distracting and sometimes overwhelming. That’s why Ford has introduced available stop-and-go safety technology for the 2017 Ford Fusion that piggybacks on existing adaptive cruise control features to create a less stressful driving experience. Even if you can’t quite ditch the traffic, at least you can lose the stress about it.
When the 2017 Fusion is equipped with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology, the stress of slow moving traffic is lessened greatly. What stop-and-go technology will do for you is, when activated, it monitors the road around you using a radar- and camera-based system, which takes a reading of the road every 50 milliseconds. It tracks the traffic and adjusts the Fusion’s cruise control according to the flow of traffic. In slow, stop-and-go traffic the car can automatically slow itself to a stop and, once traffic beings to flow again, then continue on up to the set speed and following distance. This allows you a little breathing room when traffic is slow but congested.
“When testing this system, we traveled to cities like Chicago and Los Angeles, heading straight for the worst possible congestion. It was important for us to test this system under conditions the average driver encounters every workday.” –Scott Lindstrom, Ford driver-assist technologies manager
