When Ford introduced the Mustang in 2015, they said that this was going to be the first one which came with both left and right-hand drive. The goal here was to help Ford become a global leader in sports cars, or in this case, muscle cars. This decision has paid off for them with the Mustang becoming the bestselling sports vehicle or one of the best in a number of key markets including the UK, Germany, and Australia.
The right-hand drive Mustang claimed the bestselling sports vehicle title in another market recently with Indian buyers rushing to buy every Mustang GT that was shipped there.
Mustang Leads India
The Mustang only comes in the GT form for Indian customers. This means that the 5 L V8 comes as standard on every Mustang sold in the region. Since it is only available with this engine and a 6-speed auto transmission, the car is pretty expensive. Owning one in India could cost you upwards of $97,000, and this is before you start worrying about the cost of insurance.
That is a lot of money. Most Americans cannot devote so much money to a car and it is even less of an amount for Indians. Indians make about 70% less than Americans in the same type of job.
The Mustang GT
This lavish car was displayed at the Delhi Auto Expo this year and captured the attention of many buyers. The car comes with some impressive specifications which have every Indian car lover weak at the knees.
Apart from the high-powered engine and superior gearbox, the car delivers 401 PS and 515 Nm of torque. It can go from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph. That is pretty fast. That is even fast and furious fast.
There are four drive modes to choose from including normal, snow/wet, sports, and sports+. The car seats four and has six fabulous colors for buyers to choose from. It also comes with a touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry, Ford MyKey, and push button start/stop.
Premium Luxury
The Mustang GT has been priced as a premium luxury vehicle in this market but after a month-long sales in the summer of 2016, it is already the best-selling sports car in the country.
This is just one more feather in Ford's cap as it further increases the list of markets in which the Mustang is a popular sports car. But unlike their experience in Australia, UK, or Germany, they didn't have to sell thousands of Mustangs in order to get to the front of the pack.
In fact, they didn't even have to sell 100 of them in order to lead the Indian market. They just needed to sell 35 units in the first month with a total of 100 planned for the entire year. Allegedly, all of these cars have buyers already. There's a sagacious chance they are going to lead the sports car market in India for the rest of the year too. There is nothing wrong with that!
Sales
While sales might not play a crucial role in Fords plans when it comes to selling sports cars, since the Mustang GT has proved to be so popular, they can add another country where people prefer buying the Mustang to other sports cars on their list.
While competitors have only been able to sell 5-10 units the Mustang has blown everyone else out of the market. The car is being sold through select dealers in New Delhi and Mumbai. This is the sixth-generation Mustang and things are only going to get better as time goes on. Ford is rocking the house!
