The auto market is crowded and Ford is looking to distinguish itself by focusing on performance vehicles like the Focus. As far as details of the Focus ST are concerned, there is not much to go on.

Performance all the way

A quick look at the sales will reveal that the market is more geared towards performance vehicles. They have been more popular than the Vignale luxury variants that were introduced some time ago.

The formula is simple and Ford will continue to bank on it as long as it is viable – accessible and affordable performance. One particular change that has caught the attention of the experts as well as the fans is the downsized turbo engines from 2 liter four cylinder petrol and diesel variants.

The change has been made to honor the new RDE (Real Driving Emissions) norms and 2021 CO2 average fleet standard of 95g/km. It will come into effect two years after the next Ford Focus will be introduced which means Ford will have to work on it.

Ford does not stop working. This a prolific company. Not only the best auto company, it is one of the finest companies in the world, in any category. On top of this, Ford does not treat people terribly like United Airline does! Ford wants you in their cars, unlike that airline, which seems to want you out of their planes. That is about as bad as the IRS treats Americans (certainly under Lois Lerner!) or the EPA used to treat businesses.

New member in the family

Ford has welcomed to the family the 1.5 liter petrol engine that has been designed from the ground up to meet the new emission guidelines. The real challenge for the team will be to make the new engine deliver 250bhp of raw power. In order to achieve this rare feat, the team will have to extract 160bhp of power from 1 liter which is comparatively way more than the usual 125bhp per liter which is being currently extracted from the familiar 2.0 liter ecoboost engine.

To counter this challenge, the company is currently rumored to be working on a twin scroll turbocharged direct injection and cylinder deactivation technology. This will help Ford maintain or even increase the power of the vehicle while still honoring the new norms.

To keep things in perspective, the 1.5 liter ecoboost engine that is being used in the new Fiesta ST easily churns out 131bhp per liter. This means that Ford engineers should be able to get 150-160bhp of power from the 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine.

Dates

Tyrone Johnson, Ford Performance Project manager at Geneva, said that diesel is important for the success of the Focus ST. Experts believe that the new Focus ST is going to be unveiled sometime in the spring of next year. This will put the launch date about six months after the new luxury models of the Focus are unveiled at the end of this year.

Experts further believe that the launch will not be ready for the Frankfurt Motor Show scheduled in September, and instead make a debut on a unique event like the Fiesta's Go Further event. The Vignale (which is incredible) and more mainstream models are going to make an appearance in the autumn of 2018. The news is yet to be confirmed by official sources.

Serious engine upgrades

While not much will be changed on the appearance front, the Focus is essentially going to be a whole new car under the hood. Even though it will be based on an upgraded version of the C2 which is used as the base platform, the Focus will use the Mk4 as a second model cycle.

The Focus program will follow the Fiesta schedule with more emphasis on the interior and exterior quality than any radical changes made to the core styling.
