Whether it’s as a patient for the annual trip to the vet or a faithful road trip companion, we love having our furry friends join us out on the open road. Catching a glimpse of an excited puppy sticking his head out the back window of a passing vehicle can be a highlight of even the grumpiest commuter’s day. However, this doesn’t mean that they are exempt from the typical safety precautions; in fact, having free reign in the car may put them in greater danger than an unchecked child. Here are some tips, tricks, and tools in order to keep pets safe and comfortable while riding in the car.

Buckle Up

You wouldn’t let yourself or your child ride in a car without a seatbelt, so why should your pets be the exception? Crates, carriers, and kennels are the most common and safety-tested devices for pet transportation, allowing for a cushy, relaxing experience for easily frazzled animals while also allowing for extra protection and preventing injuries in case of an accident. Make sure your carrier is the right size for your pet and that is provides good air circulation; aluminum and plastic reinforced with fiberglass are the most durable materials.

If you have a squirmy puppy who just cannot sit still while riding shotgun, how about trying a specialty doggy seat belt or barrier in order to keep them restrained while also allowing a little extra wiggle room? They can be specially designed and installed for your vehicle. In addition, keeping the dog away from the driver’s lap helps prevent distracted driving from all ends, including the driver, passengers, and fellow motorists. Although most of these products are marketed for canines, they can be easily modified and custom fitted for any feline friends.

Hot Dog

While humans may be able to withstand rising temperatures on a warmer day, our favorite animals aren’t quite as resilient. In fact, in many states it’s illegal to leave your pet alone in a hot car because the temperature inside can become significantly steamier than it is outside, and even if the windows are cracked it’s a greater risk of them dying from heat exhaustion. When in doubt, take them out when stepping away from the car. While in the vehicle, continually assess the temperature and keep the air well-ventilated through air conditioning. If your car is equipped with power windows, turn them off when riding with your pet. It’s incredibly easy for them to accidently open them and risk them getting their necks caught on the window or jumping out of a moving vehicle.

Pit Stop Tips

  • Schedule breaks every two to three hours so your dog can stretch their legs and relieve themselves if necessary.

  • Bring along fresh water and bowl even for short trips so that they don’t risk getting dehydrated.

  • Feed them at least three hours before a trip.

  • Don’t give them any treats or chew toys while the vehicle is moving; they could risk choking.

  • Even though it’s tempting, don’t let them stick their head out the window too much. The increased sun exposure can dry out their eyes.

  • If your puppy gets sick easily, start them out with smaller excursions until they’re more comfortable with the sensation.
