The new Ford F-150 Lightning is about to get even better than expected. Recently, Ford announced that its all-electric pickup truck will offer greater horsepower and a bigger payload capacity than first described. The truck’s standard-range battery pack will also get a performance boost, providing 452 hp instead of 426, with the extended-range pack producing 580 hp from a previous 563. In addition, these pickups will be equipped with an extra 235 pounds for an ultimate payload capacity of 2,235 pounds.

“We were seriously focused on raising the bar on this truck, including after we revealed it, so we can deliver more for our customers,” Dapo Adewusi, an F-150 Lightning vehicle engineering manager, said in a statement. “Our drive for continuous improvement will get a big boost when we start getting feedback and ideas from customers when they receive their Lightnings.”

Ford began production on the F-150 Lightning a few weeks ago and is currently working on reaching its goal of making 150,000 of them annually (the company is already processing over 200,000 reservations for the extremely popular pickup). The F-150 Lightning is currently the only full-size all-electric pickup available with an initial price of under $40,000, and these new specs would appear to give a leg up in the expanding EV market. The conventional combustion-engine F-150, of course, is still the best-selling pickup truck in the nation.

When it comes to the innovative all-electric edition, this isn’t the first time it has exceeded expectations. Back in March, the EPA stated that the extended-range F-150 Lightning has the ability to drive 320 miles on just a single charge, about 20 miles farther than Ford had first described. And as journalistic sources previously noted, the pickup’s battery will be able to charge other electric vehicles and even power your home for up to three days in case of a blackout. Imagine how handy that kind of juice will be on a camping trip.

One of the biggest questions now is what else will the F-150 Lightning bring to customers? At Haldeman Ford in East Windsor, we can’t wait to find out!
