There's this thing called the carbon cycle that you probably learned about in a science class. Carbon dioxide is the fourth most common gas in the air we breathe (behind nitrogen, oxygen, and argon). Plants draw CO₂ out of the atmosphere, stripping the two oxygen molecules off of it, and building branches, leaves, and roots out of the remaining carbon molecules.

The waterwheel-powered trash interceptor is genius in its simplicity.

The current of the Jones Falls River makes the waterwheel spin. As it spins, it powers a conveyor, which picks up floating trash and debris, and deposits it in a dumpster where it can be collected and disposed properly.

In its first five months of operation, it picked up 100 tons of trash from Baltimore Harbor, and has inspired other around the globe.
